Course 5: Arts and Humanities: Community Arts (ART 269) Professor Carrie Patterson

To start off, this course was definitely not what I was expecting. I was expecting to be forced to draw or create something that everybody can do. That community meant only students at St. Mary’s and it was just an art requirement. But I was wrong. It mostly consisted of readings and lectures but later in the semester, the whole class was working on projects for the community and not just for St. Mary’s but for communities all around the area. During this class, participation was huge and I was not ready for that. But working with other students on projects that would positively impact communities was really inspiring but also took a lot of work and time. For example, I was part of the climate ribbon project and I volunteered to help cut the ribbon, do tabling for it at the campus center, and worked on getting the materials for the project. By doing this project, it helped me realize that art can be incorporated into anything since this was connected to climate change. The ribbons were cut from old sheets or fabrics so the project is sustainable. Each ribbon that people were asked to write on represented something that they hoped to never lose from climate change. Then the ribbons would go on tree branches or potted trestles to signify all things in the environment. This project was definitely a group effort and working with other students made me learn more about them too.

To give a sense of what the project is about but wasn’t exactly what we did but similar
